Where this data comes from
The combined number is the sum of each AEP company's public outage data — the same data behind its official outage map — collected on a rotating cycle (each utility typically refreshes within the hour; a company that isn't reporting into our sources at the moment simply isn't counted, so this total is a floor, not a guarantee). When a company posts a restoration time we show it as the official estimate; our independent estimate is computed from the outage's own recovery trend, and our county-wide estimates are graded publicly.

Does AEP give an estimated restoration time?
When a AEP company posts an estimated restoration time for an outage, we show it as the official estimate. Alongside it we show our own independent estimate from the outage's live recovery trend, which can also appear when no official time has been posted. Both appear side by side on each company's page.
How accurate is the AEP restoration estimate?
Our independent estimator is re-run after each completed county outage and checked against when the tracked outage was substantially restored (~90% of customers back); the results are on our accuracy page. Utility posted times are graded there too where they reach the national county outage data, and a utility is listed by name once enough of its outages are graded.
